Implementing policies that encourage a culture of electrical safety doesn’t have to be reactive. Taking steps to minimize the risks associated with electrical hazards will create a safe working environment for everyone, and not just the maintenance team.

One of the most important aspects of enhancing safety is establishing a routine for the maintenance of electrical equipment in the facility. This is not only vital for optimizing the performance of the equipment, but also ensuring reliability, safety and preventing unnecessary downtime.

They are LED. Yes. They will save you money. But if you are trying to plow a field, you don’t buy a Porsche. You buy a tractor. The right vehicle for the job. And the same applies to LED.

As much as some good task lighting and a ceiling full of recessed cans will make a room come alive, there’s nothing like airy, natural light. You can change your home’s color, its style, and even its structure, but when it comes to the amount of sun you get, you can rarely change much. How much natural light you home receives depends on so many different factors both in and outside of your house – the direction your home faces, the topography and structures around, the number of windows you have – these can be costly or just impossible to fix.

So, when you’re on the market for a new house, be sure to consider the lighting potential of any dwelling – lest you end up with a dungeon, or an oven.

Here are some questions to keep in mind when scoping out a new property:

Normally, south-facing homes get sun at the front of the house, and for most of the day. They tend to be brighter and warmer. A house that faces north gets light at the back and is cooler and darker. This may be especially important to note depending on your climate. When it’s cool most of the year, you may want a house that’s naturally a little warmer, if it’s warm for most of the year, you may prefer a house that doesn’t make you cook.

Also be sure to take a look around your property and note what could potentially affect your light. Does your house face an open field, or another row of houses? Are you at the base of a hill that will cast a shadow for most of the day, or at the top, almost always exposed to sunlight? These factors will influence the brightness in your home, and also the temperature.

Once your house is built, it can be costly and time-consuming to add or remove windows. So, before taking the plunge and becoming a home owner, make sure to consider the size, shape, and placement of your windows, and what that means for the home’s natural light levels.

Are there large trees close to the house blocking out the light? Will a close-by lake reflect directly into your windows? Are the windows crazy tiny or just too big? Be sure to consider modifications – window coverings you’ll have to buy, foliage you’ll have to trim – and whether or not they would make a difference.

Of the top five U.S. cities most likely to encounter major storm activity such as a hurricane, two of them are in the state of Florida. Residents of the Sunshine State also endure their fair share of thunderstorms, tornadoes, and tropical storms, all of which can cause a great deal of damage to a home’s electrical system. The key to weathering any storm is being prepared, so neither you, nor your home, is left powerless.

During a power outage, you may be left without a number of resources, including electricity, water, or heat. Plan ahead to ride out the storm safely and comfortably, using these tips:

This is if you do not have an attic fan installed. Regular vents do allow for some cooling, but not to an extent that you’ll notice the difference.

A properly installed and serviced attic fan can help drop your attic temperatures by as much as 50 degrees, making your entire house cooler. This means you’ll be able to turn up your air conditioner’s thermostat by as much as 10 degrees, but still remain comfortable.

In the wintertime, moisture can quickly turn to ice or frost, and as that expands in can damage your roof and the structural integrity of your attic. An attic fan, however, can fend off the moisture before it is able to damage your roof in this manner.

Ice is not the only danger that moisture brings, either. When moisture cannot be ventilated and is left to sit, mold can start growing. Unfortunately it’s very easy for moisture to reach your attic—even your showering and cooking allows this to happen. But an attic fan can resolve this problem.

Your air conditioner will not have to work so hard to do its job when it is assisted by an attic fan. Also, it’s likely to last a lot longer—given that you schedule regular maintenance—when you don’t have to run it as often. Repairs will happen from time to time, but an efficiently working AC system is a lot less likely to give you problems than one that doesn’t have the assistance of an attic fan.
