Are you having power go out intermittently? Are some lights and receptacles working in some rooms while others are not? Are some outlets going out randomly, then coming back on again?

You may have a problem with corrosion at the meter main distribution panel outside.

Our salty air combined with humidity causes the aluminum wire connections at the panels to collect salt crystals and break down the conductive wires and termination points, causing weak conductivity or a break altogether. This could be a fire hazard. There could be a hot spot from an electrical arc or exposed live wires, not just the lights going out.

Solution? After determining that indeed the problem is the above with a diagnostic check; first, we need to call the utility company and have an on-call service man to come out and turn off the power coming in from the pole. Next, one of our licensed electricians will be there to clean off the metal parts inside the meter panel box. He will scrub the corroded aluminum electrical metal parts with a wire brush, cover the metal with a special spray to inhibit future corrosion, and then apply an antioxidant material to the jaws of the meter clips and wire screw down points. Finally, tighten everything up and have the utility man plug the meter back in.

Now that should do it.

Whole-house generators are permanent installations on one’s property. They must be properly sized for the electrical demands of that property, and they are hardwired right into the home’s electrical system. For many homeowners, especially those in urban and suburban areas, this level of protection is a bit of overkill. The portable generator is a versatile piece of equipment that you can use in many different settings in order to power an admittedly more limited array of electronics.

A portable generator is not going to keep your entire house up and running, nor will it be able to support large HVAC systems. You must plug your gadgets and electronics directly into the generator in order to use it. If you are just looking to keep a few items up and running during a power outage—allowing you to run the refrigerator to protect your food supply, charge your phones, even watch a DVD—then a portable generator is a great option to consider. Not only that, but they are extremely handy for camping trips, and even tailgating on game day. They can also be used to power medical equipment in a pinch. 1. Jar Jar Annoys Basically Everyone

At the Golden Raspberry Awards, better known as the Razzies, the award for Worst Supporting Actor went to Ahmed Best, who voiced the character Jar Jar Binks in STAR WARS: EPISODE 1, THE PHANTOM MENACE. Poor Jar Jar, you-sa not much appreciated by STAR WARS fans.

2. The Worst Picture of the Year

The Roth 401(k) combined elements of the Roth IRA and the traditional 401(k). In a traditional 401(k), you contribute income without paying taxes on it. You then pay taxes on the funds when you withdraw them during retirement. With the Roth 401(k), however, you pay the taxes upfront so that you can withdrawal funds tax-free during retirement.

 5. The Melissa Worm Attacks the Internet

At the end of March 1999, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above the 10,000 mark at 10,006.78. This was unprecedented! People made “DOW 10,000” hats and celebrated. In hindsight, people wonder whether that day represented the peak of our economy’s health up to that point or the peak of market excess that was responsible for the economic instability of the 2000s.

7. You Are the One, Neo

Legendary film director Steven Spielberg was once again named Best Director at the Academy Awards for SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. In fact, the director of early 80s movies like E.T. was on a real tear, just coming off of the JURASSIC PARK series and SCHINDLER’S LIST. He continues to direct great movies today.

9. Roberto Begnigni Is Exuberant 

Roberto Benigni won Best Actor for his role in LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL at the 1999 Academy Awards. His reaction immediately became more popular that the movie itself. I’ll have a glass of whatever he’s drinking!

10. Gwyneth Wins Best Actress

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE was the most awarded film of the night of the Academy Awards. Perhaps the most touching award acceptance, though, was Gwyneth Paltrow’s. Try to watch her acceptance speech without getting teary. I dare you.

11. Lewinsky Tells All

In March, 1999, The Supreme Court of the United States upheld the murder convictions of Timothy McVeigh for the Oklahoma City bombing, which left too many dead and wounded to even go into detail here. It was a tragic and totally unnecessary crime, and the Supreme Court decision echoed the feelings of many Americans.

14. Stanley Leaves Us

On the day after we lost Stanley Kubrick, we lost another beloved American hero, the legendary baseball player Joe DiMaggio. His death was caused by lung cancer. He was 84 and sure saw America from an interesting point of view. The loss of this former star was felt all over the nation.

It’s fun to think back to these moments in the popular culture of 1999, even though not everything that happened was happy. Most of us lived through all these events and remember them well. Come back next month to see what we resurrect next.

Most homeowners typically don’t give their electrical systems a whole lot of thought, and we wouldn’t expect them to. However, with the increasing demands we place on these systems—with the purchase of high efficiency appliances and devices such as smart phones and tablets—it is important to consider your safety as well as the effectiveness of your electrical system.

One of the most effective ways to keep your electrical outlets throughout your home as safe as possible is by installing Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets in areas that need them the most. These areas include places where you use plumbing, since the main function of these outlets is to shut off the power if there is any risk of electrical shock near a water source.

Chances are, you already have a couple GFCI outlets installed somewhere in your home. You’ll recognize them as the outlets that have a “test” and “reset” button. As mentioned above, they are most used in areas with water sources—so bathrooms and kitchens. However, if you have an older home with outdated wiring, this may not be the case. In some cases you might even need rewiring services just to allow for the installation of GFCI outlets.

While bathrooms and kitchens are the most important locations for these outlets, they are not the only spaces that will benefit from them. You may want to consider GFCI outlet installation in your laundry room, crawlspace, basement, utility room, or even your garage.

Many homeowners with small children choose to update the entire home for safety purposes. Additionally, you might want to consider Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) outlet installation as well. Unlike ground faults—which can lead to electric shocks—arc faults are caused by damaged wires and can lead to fire.
